Plastic Aviation Conference

The future of plastics
in aerospace

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

in the past, Germany has coined several expressions that are now known around the world. „Industry 4.0“ is a recent example, but also the word „Mittelstand“. It characterizes the myriad of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which constitute the backbone of the German economy.

Krüger Aviation is one of these SMEs, a leading company in its segment of plastics in aerospace. We are therefore proud to support and happy to invite you to the 1st ever Plastic Aviation Conference, at the gates of Hamburg, one of the world’s leading aviation sites. A new event on an exciting and innovative segment, bringing together experts from around the globe and from different backgrounds – large corporations as well as the Mittelstand. I’m looking foward to seeing you here!

With best regards,

Dr. Franz Josef Kirschfink, Managing Director Hamburg Aviation

No matter where in the world you board an aircraft – it is quite likely that the cabin was made in Hamburg: A global aviation hub and the leading region for the development of aircraft interiors. A place where the tradition of German engineering meets a cosmopolitan attitude.

We are 40,000 people working on the passenger experience of the future. Optimizing cabin design, production, maintenance, repair and overhaul – at Airbus, Lufthansa Technik or one of the other 300 enterprises in the metropolitan region of Hamburg which set industry benchmarks with their products and services.

While Hamburg might have not invented the airplane, we improve it, step by step. Every day.

Presentations

1st Day November 14, 2018

Presentation 1: Quadrant

Rethinking High-End Engineering of Plastics

Mr. Frank Johaenning
Global Market Manager Transportation & Aerospace

Hydraulic fluids and plastics do not fit together? The use of plastics is limited to 150°C max? Quadrant’s presentation at Plastic Aviation Conference will show you why many of the “traditional” beliefs in the segment can be proven wrong, and which new products and applications are already in use today to overcome industry challenges.

Presentation 2: KASIGLAS

Getting You Covered - Protective and Functional Coatings for Transparent Plastics

Dr. Philip Heier
Head of Coating Development

Modern surface technology can add glass-like surfaces to different polymeric substrates, taking key characteristics of the material - like wear & chemical resistance and durability - and to a whole new level. So, can transparent plastics even be the better glass? Learn about the technology’s pros, as well as how innovative coatings do address the cons.

Presentation 3: Sabic

Sabic Products and Future View
on Aircraft Market

Join us on a journey of plastics and get a strong insight into the different evolutions in Aircraft Cabins. The presentation will bridge the different building blocks and potential future ideation to Sabic material solutions in functionality and compliancy in a global perspective.

Presentation 4: Röchling

How can innovative materials, processes and new machining lead to progress in demanding industries?

Wide range of thermoplastics & composites for construction of light-weight & safe aeroplanes. Unique processing know-how from micromachining to large volume sheets and components offers unlimited possibilities. International group with locations worldwide. Closer to customers everywhere.

Presentations

2nd Day November 15, 2018

Presentation 1: Boltaron

Plastics in Aircraft Interiors:
“They imagined. We innovated.”

A session filled with stories of thermoplastic material innovation for interior component and finish design, transcending traditional cabin aesthetics. This presentation will walk through a timeline of the use of plastics within the cabin (standard opaque use), etc., and lead up to present day - with real stories of unique innovations that use plastic and meet compliance regulations, while also providing ‘wow factor.’

Presentation 2: Boltaron

Tailor-Made Polymers – When Standard Sizes Don’t Fit

Since its foundation in 1995, the Institute for Polymer Technologies (IPT) has been surprising industry experts with creative solutions in different projects. In this presentation, you will learn how plastics can be modified to fit your specific requirements and used in ways already ruled out before.

Presentation 3: Hamburg Aviation Nachwuchspreis

Future multifunctional lightweight design structures based on polymer coated carbon fibres

ZAL

ZAL — Hamburg’s Center for Applied Aeronautical Research — is the technological research and innovation network of the civilian aviation industry in the Hamburg Metropolitan Region. Its stakeholders include Airbus, LH Technik, the City of Hamburg, DLR, universities and numerous others - securing and continually expanding the world’s third largest civil aviation location in Hamburg. The focus is on the integration and industrialization of aviation technologies. ZAL has been at home in its TechCenter since 2016. With a working area of almost 26,000 square meters (280,000 sq ft), the ZAL TechCenter provides space for over 30 partners around 600 workplaces in offices, laboratories, and hangars. Its Centers of Competence include Aircraft Interiors, Cabin Acoustics, Virtual Reality Engineering and Industry 4.0 tech.

Airbus Finkenwerder

The Airbus Finkenwerder site is, along with Toulouse, the largest facility of the European OEM and „birthplace“ of the Airbus A319 and A321. Today, 50% of all A320 family aircraft are delivered from Hamburg – up to 30 a month. With four final assembly lines, Hamburg is the leading single-aisle factory for Airbus. The Finkenwer- der factory is also responsible for cabin installation, painting and the large chunk of deliveries of the Airbus A380, as well as fuselage assembly and cabin definition for the Airbus A350 XWB. And of course, a home turf to the Beluga Super Transporter, frequenting the airport several times a day.
